Android free of Google/samsung limitations (I)

People trusted in Google because they were afraid of  Microsoft and Apple behavior.

Having Linux inside of the Android base seemed to be a good point in order to feel free and  many IT professionals, gurus and some even free software fighters were in the first line of the Android army.

However applications for Android are not Linux compatible apps but a Java flavor apps, thus existing free apps for Linux, Maemo,... will not be easily ported to Android.
Furthermore accessing to the Linux layer and its services requires to root the device thus root your device should be a "todo" but it is not always easy and with no risks :(

Even very recognized organizations such as FSFE suggests to root Android
http://fsfe.org/campaigns/android/android.en.html

It is a pity that other operating system were not promoted, or devices using them bought enough by the community.

An example of these better OS are:
  • Maemo, Meego,Mer  real linux environments and able to run linux compatible code
  • WebOS(from Palm) OS based in linux and apps based on HTML5/Web application

Now, the alternatives to Android/iOS/Windows comes from:
  • Jolla and its SailfishOS,  a phone created by some of the Nokia people, compatible with Linux code and QT SDK. Also able to execute Android apps
  • Firefox OS.
  • Blackberry  and BB10 OS based QNX (linux flavour), also including physical keyboard support. Apps based in C++/QT, HTML5,...and also able to execute Android apps via the included "Android runtime"

After this overview of current mobile phone scene, see below how to fight against the many lacks of Android:

If you are going to buy an Android phone
Buy a device from the following list of phones with a procedure to root
http://www.xda-developers.com/root/

Avoid using Google Play and use F-Droid repository as much as possible
Settings, Security, (Device Administration), Unknown sources (check)
F-droid  It can be done even with a device not associated to a google account
https://f-droid.org/   and install apk from the Interner browser.

Reset your device
If you feel that you don't have the control of your device, maybe you installed many apps from google play with 'abusive licenses' and too many rights
Settings, Backup and reset, (Personal data), Factory data reset

Configure your Android for standalone use (avoid google cloud, etc)

There are 3rd party software better than that included in Android
      DejaOffice
      Offline GPS/Maps(OSMAnd, Navit, Sygic, Tomtom..)
      K9 Mail

https://fsfe.org/activities/nocloud/nocloud.en.html

Check and Disable things from Google Settings
Open "Google Setting" app and check all sections.
from Security, disable "Verify apps" (optional)
from Location, disable "Access location"

Disable Location services
 in Settings, Location Services,
   Disable/Uncheck "Location and Google search"
There are 3rd party software for GPS and maps such as sygic
Furthermore you can still using google maps entering your position manually
and even you can disable it, and enable it only when you need it.

Checks running services/processes
Control what is happening ak paranoiac mode

from Settings, Application manager, Running, "Show cached processes"
    Google play services(launched by apps)
       Google Analytics services
    Email
    Factory mode (required)
    Google+
    Exchange services (required by SMS)

from Settings, Application manager, Running, "Show services in use"

Stop apps/processes
Once you know what apps are being executed
from Settings, Application manager, All,

select app and Click "Force Stop"
after a stop several times we can realize if they are important or not, so they can be disabled forever

Disable built-in apps or remove if you are root
(Google, Phone  brand, communications provider)

from Settings, Application manager, All

-ChatON (Samsung)
-Game Hub (Samsung)
-Gmail (optional)
-Google .... Sync
-Google partner Set up

-Google Play Music and Books
-Google Search
-Google+
-Picasa Uploader
-Samsung Account
-Samsung AppsUNA2
-Samsung Backup Provider

-Samsung ......Sync
-Samsung Cloud data relay
-Samsung Push services
-Samsung Browser
-Software update (if you are not expecting a new update)
-Talk

Autostarts and permissions

To find problematic apps

execute free app "Autostarts", and check sections:

"During Startup", "After Startup", " Wi-Fi state changed", "Power connected", "Connectivity changed",..
(to  disable them, root is required)

execute free app "OS Monitor" to display Android/linux processes, TCP/IP open connections,...

 execute free app "OS Monitor"

To fix/correct problematic apps

on Android. From: AppsOp  (if it is hidden there is an app in f-droid archive to open the menu)
on BB10+Cobalt's play services: From "Blackberry Google ID", "App Permissions"

Check if it has sense that the app has the following rights and last time the app used it ( to detect abuse)

Read your contacts, Read clipboard, Location, Run at startup....
    Post notification

Remove rights:

EasyDebian On Maemo

A complete desktop PC in my pocket
Why? There are many technical reason to do.
why not? It is a easy procedure, there is no danger for your Maemo OS.

It is funny to see a linux desktop distribution running on our small devices, and there some applications missing in Maemo, and available with this way.
Using easydebian can be useful for some tasks, however the user interface wasn't designed for work in a small screen and you will feel tired after a time.

ss_easydebian

I think this instructions are easier than other available in Internet.
(tested on Nokia N800)

1 Install easydebian (aka Turbo Easy Debian for Everyone) from Maemo.org or Application (Maemo Extras repository)
1.1 You must chose menus for some access shortcuts (if you prefer don't mix with Maemo menu categories, you could create a menu 'debian' and place all this access links there)

2 Download on PC the following linux imagefile for easydebian
http://qole.org/files/
debian-squeeze-img.tar.bz2

3 Unpack downloaded file with 7zip, Winrar, (your prefer uncompress tool)
Unpack previous file to
debian-squeeze.img.tar
Unpack previous file .tar to
debian-squeeze.img.ext2

3 Copy imagefile to SD memory, for example to
//media/mmc1
You can copy in any format partition (FAT,EXT,..) and folder, you only need 1.3GB on target

4 Give the path of image to easydebian
edit /home/user/.chroot
write a new line with the path where we copied the imagefile
IMGFILE=/media/mmc1/debian-squeeze.img.ext2
(lines with # are comments)

5 Executing
Execute the app on menus (LXDE Desktop)
wait and now you have linux running

6 Executing apps without from Maemo Desktop (no need LXDE desktop)
From terminal(as normal user)
#debbie linux_app_name (e.g. keepassx)
(on N800 to show onscreenkeyboard, open Toggle Matchbox-kbd)

apt-get easydebian

Config the environment
Onscreen keyboard are on main menu/accesories

Open a terminal and execute
sudo apt-get update
This command download info from internet debian repositories

Now you can install apps using a graphic way(1) or command way(2)

(1)Execute Synaptic (install manager) from a terminal with: sudo synaptic

(2) sudo apt-get install keepassx
(Keepass is an example of app)

Nokia phones - Symbian OS

Tricks in Nokia phones:
-PCSuite
Default pcsuite path for backups

if you forgot backup your contact list, sms ,...
C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\PC Suite\%phoneIMEI%
PCCSContact.db
(SQL lite 3 format)
Open SQLite Manager for Firefox

-Installing message after turn on
if always we have an install message "Instalando" we must go to the folder where Nokia store files about previous failed installations (SD card, \private\10202dce).

The folder is hidden, but we can see it from the pc, after plug one as massive storage device.

ReactOS - over vmware/virtualbox

an alternative Windows compatible Operating System
ReactOS at 2018

[updated 2018]
After 10 years the project is still alive and its quite reliable now and it is close to replace Windows XP.

Install on a virtual machine as:
other linux32
RAM 1,2gb
HD 2gb (VDI dynamic)
NET: pcnet fastIII

(add shared folder)

[old entry:2008]Too far to be a stable version free of hang ups or blue screens.
In conclusion too experimental at least for normal users however the system is working and improving quickly and maybe when you are reading that could be a usable system

Blue screen like in the real Windows ;)

Testing FreeDOS (v1.1) over Vmware

what is Freedos?
An operative system
>>FreeDOS aims to be a complete, free, 100% MS-DOS compatible operating system<<

http://www.freedos.org/

Why use freeDOS actually?
Maybe all the answers are a bit freak for the most. You can play old games, surf in internet with a rare webbrowser (arachne), and a bit more productive, you could execute dos programs like compilers, office,....

Why use it over vmware?
-vmware is virtual machine server, therefore you can have virtual pcs inside your windows/linux,.... you can use your apps, and to use freedos in other window.
-is "gratis" *
-vmware emulate standard and compatible PC hardware (easier for testing than to use different real hardware)

* however you need to register in the page for a serial number.
http://www.vmware.com/download/server

INSTRUCTIONS
-Download and burn FreeDos in a cdrom
-Create a new virtual machine in vmware (300 mb of harddrive are enough)
-Put FreeDos in cdrom drive
-Start the new virtual machine and it will detect the autobootcd
-Install all the packets
-At the end the install will try to configure, but probably hang up (don't worry)
-After reset FreeDos.
-You could see a boot menu with memory options (option 2 EMM386+EMS: crash in vmware) you must choose 1 or 3
-Configuring the network card (vmware emulate a AMD 79c97oA -PCNET family)
-Go to fdos directory (cd fdos)
-In theory you must execute crynwr.bat file (script) BUT there is a problem in the script when you select 1 or 5 then script crash (*).

However the solution is very simple:
You can execute the next command:
c:\FDOS\drivers\net\crynwr\pcntpk int=0x60

and now you can surf in internet with arachne webbrowser
c:\FDOS\arachne\arachne.bat

Now you have a FreeDos with network working :)

(*) my point of view about the script problem, I think the main reasons are:
- c:\fdos\temp directory isn't created
- FreeDos by default doesn't start autoexec.bat (i don't know why)
- crynwr.bat script try to write in a variable %autofile% and this variable don't exist, i suppose %autofile% should be assigned to autoexec.bat
- FreeDos by default doesn't start autoexec.bat ¿why?
