PIM Data conversion -Contacts, Calendar, Tasks, Memos,..

Replace a platform is a hard decision, and too many times implies data loss. After spend sometime looking for methods find below how I moved from Palm OS to Android.

FROM PALMOS TO ANDROID:

**PalmOS**

General info.
PalmDesktop 4.1.4
Export
Contacts: aba, csv, tab (Export all)
excel, Word (select all, send to)
vcf (vcard) (Select all, export to vcf) *

Tasks: tda (Export all)
excel, Word (select all, send to)
Memo: mpa, csv, tab, txt (Export all)
Word (select all, send to)
Calendar: dba

* works in PalmDesktop 6

**Android**
General Info.
Contacts
Import from SIM
Import from SD (vcf file in SD) *
Import from Google
* Classification category is lost

Procedures
Palm contacts to Android contacts
Export from Palm Desktop as .vcf containing all contacts
Copy vcf file in Android SD
Import from SD in Android
Recreate categories in Phone or Kies manager

Palm Memos to Note Everything
Follow Note everything manual or
Export from Palm desktop to csv, import in excel and let the columns as

column1 =category
column2=memo content

Palm desktop to Android DejaOffice
DejaOffice has its own contacts, memos, tasks, so syncronization will not affect to default Android apps.

Requirements in Computer:
-Palm Desktop installed and previously synchronized with Palm Phone
-PC with Android Phone drivers (Install Kies for Samsung, connect phone and drivers will be installed)
-CompanionLink * installed (Checked with v 3.0.3089)

Steps:
1. Configure CompanionLink
1.1 PDA: Android USB
1.2 PIM: Palm desktop (Access)
1.3 Configuration: Palm desktop as primary
2 Connect phone by USB
3 Execute DejaOffice in Android,
3.1 Click "Syncronize" on DejaOffice menus
3.2 Wait
3.2 Disconnect Phone from PC

Now Contacts, task, calendar and memos will be available in Dejaoffice :)

Android Calendar to DejaOffice Calendar
Android calendar is a piece of crap, with poor on features and with a lack of usability in UI.
But if you have data en Calendar and you want to move to DejaCalendar without sync with google web (I don't like the cloud).

go to "Settings", "Sync settings" and activate "Sync with Android Calendar App"

Note. At least in the spanish translated version 2.1.9
"Sync with Android Calendar App"and "Sync with Android Contact App" are incorrectly exchaged.
After select you have to chose between alarms in Android Calendar or DejaCalendar.
Chose categories to sync.

In Home/ main menu chose "Read Android Data"
Now we have real calendar. ;)

Outlook Calendar to DejaOffice Calendar (using Sundbird -> no cloud,  no shit in the middle)

From Outlook Calendar.
  Save Calendar as (as ICS)
  Date range: Specify dates
  Detail: Full detail
Advanced: Include details of items marked private

From Sunbird (Mozilla Sunbird 1.0b1)
Import ICS file  and remove instance/occurrences
Select specific events and export Selection (to ics)

From Android
Open ICS file from Android (any file explorer)
DejaOffice will import the entries and even categories will be preserved.

Although I always used my Maemo "PDA" to read reference information, in the last weeks I have been doing an intensive use of languages dictionaries in my PalmOS phone, and I realized that the applications/databases I was using had lacks in some aspects, I decided to found solution for my requirements, specifically phonetic symbols and pronunciation sound.

mobipocket OALD7

On the other hand, is possible to have and read Wikipedia in your device, there is no price for this free(as freedom as well) encyclopaedia, but your its utility is incalculable.

Project Management Software

At the moment Microsoft Project is covering big portion of the total of users of PM programs, but one of the common lacks of Microsoft is to forget about architectures or operative systems different than Windows.

--PalmOS--
*Natara Project@Hand 2

Project@Hand for PalmOS

Can import/export to Ms Project only if you install a software in your windows desktop and sync, the palm device. On the other hand you can use as stand alone app.

--MacOSX--
*OpenProj 1.4

Works stable and include the basic features, translated to some languages, many data fields, few customizable, interface could be better, Net plan view is a crap, and

Save as: .pod(default), Project2003 XML, Project .mpp, .mpx
Open XML, Ms.Project, Gnome Planner
Doesn't support project 2010 files
(Opensource and Multi-platform)

!! Notes on MacOS:
-Some features requires right button click therefore you have to use a normal mouse or press apple+alt+click instead of standard ctrl-mousebutton
-Change Date format (mm/dd/yyyy) to (dd/mm/yyyy)
edit /Applications/OpenProj.app/Contents/Info.plist
-Xms128m -Xmx768m -Duser.region=GB
-Change Interface language, add "-Duser.language=en" inside the tag
-If you are creating a new relation of dependency and you have an error, check your task and if your task has a successor then remove this relation, define predecessor dependency, and now you can create the removed relation again.

MERLIN SCREENSHOT

*Merlin 2.7.7

Nice and usable interface, good Net plan view, many data fields.

Open Project files (.mpp, .mpx), Project XML
Many option to save/export, merlin2, project, CSV, FreeMind, Image, OmniOutliner, HTML,iCal
Commercial

!! Notes:
Be careful if you import Ms project files, and check/ask about some correct dates because Merlin use some data fields in differente way than Ms. Project and the dates could change.

*OmniPlan 1.7
Basic project management software with few data fields.
Open Ms.Project files XML and mpp (fails opening .xml files saved with Merlin or Openproj)
Many option to export, project .mpx .XML, CSV, Image, OmniGraffle, OmniOutliner, HTML,iCal
Commercial

!! Notes:
This software doesn't have a PERT or Net view, fails to open some files, and sometimes when you export. Maybe in a future could be an alternative to Merlin but not now.

--Windows--
*Openworkbench 1.1.6
Powerful software, specially for PM power user, customizable views including many data fields, best alternative to Ms. Project.

Used for a long time, works stable moreover can be used as a standalone app or to connect to CA Clarity PPM Servers.
Only for Windows(requires Java)

!!Note: For Ms. project users, the planification is done using the effort (hours) of resource assigned to task.

*Ms. Project 2007
The most popular PM software, you must configure the view to show baseline bars in the Gantt, could be easier like in the alternatives.

Save as: Project .mpp, .xls, .csv, xml
Open XML, Ms.Project *

*Like is common in Microsoft, lacks of compatibility with other formats

*ConceptDraw PROJECT
Default format: cdpz(conceptdraw project), cdpx (xml)

Save as: Ms Project XML, mmap(MindManager)
Open: Ms Project( xml, mpp, mpt, mpx), mmap(MindManager)
Multiplatform. Mac, Windows
version 6.3.0 included in ConceptDraw Office 2

Fix/Improve PalmOs devices

There are some common failures, and I want to compile them beside the solution which is working for me:

My Centro Plugs

**Software**
-"Card exporter II" can't connect with PC.
“Cannot send USB descriptor. Host failure”

From a file explorer app like "Resco explorer" o "Filez"

Using "Resco explorer" go to "control panel", folder "Saved Prefs" and delete the file with the following properties:

name: System [pusc,256]
creator: pusc
size: 18bytes

using FileZ
View Preferences, Saved
pusc -none-

(note: the creator could be "pusb" in some versions)

-Rescobackup resets PDA
Some apps running in background crash the function of backup, be careful with mobileWrite and deactivate before start a backup.

-Unofficial ROM Update
If you are tired of frozen state when you receive an incoming call you should update the ROM to have more free memory on RAM.

Search in internet "centro custom ROM" or "Custom ROM centro bl00dfeast"
1. copy all the files in RAM
2. Execute ROMupdater.prc, write "nome" al press "enter/intro" key
3. After 30 sec, the procedure will be finished.
4. hard reset: remove battery, pressing power button, plug the battery again
5. Ask the question about format with "yes" and chose a language

You could add two steps, if you have important information:
0. Backup the system with RescoBackup or Nvbackup to a file in SDcard
6. Execute RescoBackup or Nvbackup and restore the file with backup

**Clean/Purge Personal data
And if you want to clone for a friend, sell or only remove your personal data...

Remove from RAM, using a rescoexplorer or Filez,
DatebookDB
CalendarDB-PDat
TasksDB-PTod
ToDoDB
MemoDB
MemosDB-PMem
CalendarDB-PDat
ContactsDB-PAdd

Using app interface:
-Calls, purge
-SMS , purge, all
-SnapperEmail, folder, Purge

**Increase Free RAM
Install "Linkstart" software, this app allows "the transparent" movement of Apps from RAM to SD. Recommendable for big apps which requires to be executed from RAM.

My moved apps:
Documents
PhotoHQ
RemotePlus
RescoView
Snapper
WorldMate Pro

**Hardware**

-Palm power connector. This isn't a standard or common connector in the street, therefore if you are prudent user you are interested in have plan B just in case.
A Palm Centro can be charged with the same voltage and strength than Nokia or other more common phones, or even with the standard USB output. (see the above image).

-PC USB doesn't recognize the device
Clean the metal contact on palm connector

-No sound output over speaker.
Try to plug the earphones, and listen on them, unplug the earphones and probably the sound will not go out by speakers.

Today the power/sound female connectors for solder on boards, have the normal pins and one additional pin to detect when the male connector is inside.

I think the problem in Palm isn't in the mechanism connector, in my opinion the detector pin give the correct signal(I think when earphones are inside, this pin will be connected to "ground" ¿?)

You can try many time with the same app, for example Itunes and it never detect the change, however if you change of app like Phone, TCMP or Coreplayer, in few attempts the app/system will detect the plug/unplug process. Why?

.. I think the problem could be a mix of hardware detection and ptunes software.

Note: if you are using a jack adaptor and unplug only the earphones voice dial can be launched.

Modem connected by USB cable:

Palm Centro(GPRS modem)
+USBmodem software(installed in Centro)
+Mobile Stream GSM (copy the script included in USBmodem packet in the MacOSx folder: /Library/Modem Scripts/)

Configuring MacOS X

Network, Config "Config Network port"
choose "Centro USB Modem"
if you can't select it, remove the item, unplug and plug the Centro, and Mac should recognize again.

hacking the palm lifedrive

Procedure to replace MD(Hitachi Microdrive HD) for a CF II(compact flash memory) in a Palm LifeDrive.(aka LifeFlash mod)

The reasons for this modification are:

-Increase battery duration (more than double)
-Decrease weight of pda
-Increase resistance to blow (no mechanic parts)

Too many people lose their LD after a strong fall, this is because Palm Os is saved in Hard drive, and when it crash, LD don't work (using this mod the more weakly part in the pda will be the screen).

Note:

My method is based in Linux livecd(standalone linux), concretally Ubuntu/Kubuntu.
I read other docs about this modification and i decide to write a new one for help to newbies)

(All people in the world would have linux livecd, but if you haven't it you can free download or request from internet,
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu )

Steps:

1. Boot computer with linux livecd

2. Take a seeing of unit drive with qtparted (this app show us all computer drives, and my case LD has 3 partitions and the name /dev/sdc)

3. Open a terminal shell (like cmd, command mode in windows)

4. We need to have administrator rights (default: ubuntu give you less rights)
>sudo passwd
(we must put the password we want)
>su
(Now ubuntu request us a passw, and this one is the password what we defined in previous step, now we are root or administrator, we have all rights)

5. Now we will make an image of MicroDrive(ld hd) and we store it in our "windows" partition.
(You need replace with you name device and the label of your partition).
>dd if=/dev/sdc of=/mnt/my_windowsxp/imageLD.img
(if=input file of=output file)
(It takes a lot of time (30min or more), you must wait to card reader light go off)

6. Replace MD from cardreader for CF memory card)

7. Execute the next command
>dd if=/mnt/my_windowsxp/imageLD.img of=/dev/sdc
(Now the source is our stored image, and target is the CF Device)

*NOTES /Recommendations:

-dd command, don't show a progress bar, because of it, we must have patiente and don't think that process is hang up, if it doesn't show an error is because the process is OK.

-/mnt/my_windowsxp this a mounted partition, normal UBUNTU automount all your partitions, BUT other linux distributions for example KUBUNTU do not automount the partitions and if you have no experience with linux could require more time to learn to mount partitions in my case with the following commands:
"mkdir /mnt/my_windowsxp"
"mount -t vfat /dev/hda5 /mnt/my_windowsxp"

-I don't recommend to lose time with windows, I tried some apps to make the image, for example Acronis True Image 10 home (true image cdbootloader don't detect MD in the card reader). I can make an image of the first partition 65mb but after it, the acronis show an error.

- Probably there are card readers which support CF mems but not md hitachi. (f.ex. card reader of a epson printer).

- I've used a SANDISK Xtreme III (expensiver than others brands), but because i wanted no risks, but now i think that many 4GB CF should run correctly. (CF mems simulates physical harddrives, and i think what should be possible to change its main structure, cylinders, heads, etc to adjust to MD structure). ***What do experts say about it? ***

>fdisk -l /dev/sdc (a commando to see the device partitions

Good luck!

GPS: Offroad Maps and PDA Soft

Today everybuddy know Tomtom and planning road routes, but there is a huge world refering to GPS, tracking routes,... and a big problem of this world is the existence of hundred formats, depending of the software which we are using which depends of the hardware platform/System operative.

In internet there are avaiable many free maps, but perhaps the format isn't the fomat which we need, sometimes is used oziexplorer format (.map + .ozf3) and this software is only available for Windows and Windows mobile.
Due this I've made an easy diagram explaining the steps for this conversion.

Symbian: SmartComGPS
Map formats: ogf2
Calibration formats: .map
Track formats:

PalmOs: PathAway
Map formats: .prc(container)
Calibration formats: .prc(container), .pwm

Palm OS Essentials (in construction)

Incomplete List. (v.05)

I've been testing and using some software for PalmOs during some years, since this operative system/Architecture was abandoned by Palm and the 3rd parties, it still being a useful device because we have enough software.

The main objective of this post is control my installed versions, and I think "that" you could be interested in know about these interesting apps.
In this entry I won't analyze the apps, "this is why" it isn't the purpose of the article but probably I will comment certain apps in future posted articles.

(Sorry for my english, but is my first english article(but not the last) and for sure I had too many mistakes, don't hesitate in correct them with a comment ;)
